Royal Military Tattoo
Edinburgh, Scotland
The Royal Military Tattoo is an incredible event that takes place each summer at Edinburgh Castle. It runs each night for several weeks in August. It brings together military bands from around the world to put on one of a kind cultural performances in an epic venue. Attending this event was on my bucket list - and once wasn't enough. So far I've been three times and counting.
If you ever plan on visiting Scotland, I would schedule it around seeing this event, even though August is the most busiest and expensive time to visit - it's worth the splurge. Plus, with Fringe Festival going on at the same time, Edinburgh is the place to be. You'll need to plan well in advanced as hotel rooms will be hard to find if you wait too long.
The night I attended the Tattoo in 2022, the guest of honor was from Ukraine's Navy. He received a standing ovation. When he headed up the bleachers to his seat people were standing up to shake his hand. He walked right by me. I won't forget the emotion on his face.
A couple of nights before, the guest of honor was, Sir Ian McKellen.
I really enjoy seeing how each country's culture comes through their performance. I love how you can always tell when the Americans come out, there's no need to consult the brochure to see who's up next.
The bagpipers are always my favorite. I don't know why, but the sound of the pipes makes me emotional every time. There must be hundreds of pipers out there. The night ends with the whole cast and fireworks. It's spectacular. The Royal Military Tattoo is always the highlight of my trip to Scotland.
Get your tickets well in advance as it usually sells out. I recommend getting seats directly across from the castle for the best view - especially the end. Plus, you get the fast track entrance and a free event program.
Be aware that they have strict copyright enforcement regarding filming the show. You can only upload videos under a minute to any platform or they will get muted or taken down.
My favorite part of the Royal Military Tattoo.
